A furious finish to the Islamorada Run, Walk, Crawl was so close that organizers gave out two first-place medals.

David Kroupa, 45, and Craig Cotnair, 44, both crossed the finish line of the 3.1-mile event in 18 minutes, 11 seconds.

The time clock said Kroupa, no address listed, was first by less than seven-tenths of a second.

"With it that close, we gave out two first-place medals for the men’s age 41-45 group," said Founders Park staffer Maria Bagiotti.

Cotnair, of Margate, and Kroupa also were the top runners in the event that drew nearly 100 people to the 8 a.m. start on New Year’s Day.

A visiting teenager, Jan Kalkus, 14, of New Jersey, had the fifth fastest men’s time at 19:36.

Terri McCurdy, 41, of Anderson, Ind., set the pace among the women with a time of 21:26.
