Visitors win 5K in Southernmost City

Keys residents fill most other slots

The South and the Midwest crossed the finish line first when the running was over in the YMCA 5-K Run and Walk through Key West.

Rafael Martinez of Alamo, Texas, ran an 18-minute, 36-second time to lead all participants in the Jan. 3 event that launched the 2004 running calendar for the Southernmost Runners Club.

Alexandra Alves of Brecksville, Ohio, was the overall female winner, at 19:41 for the 3.1-mile distance.

In the Masters divisions, Mira Bedo of Tavernier topped all women at 23:19. Among male Masters, Key Wester Michael Baily set the pace at 18:44.

Doug Seba and Roberta Depiero, both of Key West were the fastest walkers.
